Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) 2025: What you Need to Know

What is a Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP)? A CRP is a form showing how much rent a tenant has paid over the past year. Property owners, operators, and managers are required to provide a CRP to each tenant who has rented from them during the previous year, with exception of tax exempt property. More information can be found at https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/renters-credit.

CRPs For Investors

If you own or manage property and rent living space to someone during the year, you must issue CRPs to your tenants if either of these apply:

  • Property tax was payable on the property in 2024
  • You were not required to pay property tax, but you made payments in lieu of property taxes

This form must be given to each renter by January 31, 2025.

CRPs For Renters

Renters can file CRPs with their taxes to get a renter’s property tax refund depending on their income levels. Property owners or managing agents must issue CRPs to all tenants by January 31, 2025. Beginning with tax year 2024, renters will no longer need to file a Renter’s Property Tax Refund form. Instead, the credit will now be added to your income tax return.
